There is no doubt that efforts by government through the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement System (GhIPSS), the Bank of Ghana, Commercial banks as well as Telecommunication companies, to promote a Cashless economy, is yielding significant results, with Mobile money leading the way.
Even before implementation of the Mobile Money interoperability by the Bank of Ghana to facilitate money transfer across different networks, figures from the regulator show that total value of mobile money transactions in 2017 reached GHS109 billion by September, compared to GHS51.4 billion recorded for the same period in 2016 - An impressive growth of 112% over a 12 month period.
Mobile money is increasingly changing the way business transactions are conducted and the channel’s performance over the last year is a strong indication of the growing acceptance of the technology. In fact, both sellers and consumers continue to realize the convenience in receiving and making payments for goods and services using mobile money other than physical cash. The reason is simple! It is fast, safe and secure.
In our bid to support the Cashless economy agenda, Melon Concept encourages its Selewa Market participants to transact through cashless platforms by partnering Banks, Telcos and E-payment service providers to facilitate the process. We go a step further to motivate our shoppers by way of gifts and attractive discounts when they use cashless means of payment at our market. As a business, we believe this pilot approach is a more effective and sustainable means to gradually change the ingrained cash-led transaction behaviour of Ghanaians, to ‘Cashlite’ and ultimately, Cashless - All it takes is a good user experience. Join us at the next Selewa Market for a great Cashless experience.
At Selewa we believe one doesn’t need to have deep pockets or be rich to help the needy - All you need is a HEART. To this end we hold a charity exercise dubbed B.R.E.A.D. at our markets to support our brothers and sisters on the breadline. B.R.E.A.D. is an acronym for ‘Be Ready to Eat And Donate’.
The charity seeks to collect donations from our market participants (shoppers and vendors) in exchange for a food item (eg. loaf of bread). Donations received from the charity exercise is then donated to a registered charity organization in Ghana. The Selewa B.R.E.A.D. charity initiative was formally launched by actor and evangelist Majid Michel on 29th September, 2018
